Scent accuracy only makes sense when there is something to compare against. A decant can be checked against the same perfume from a reliable source. Two completely different perfumes should be compared by smell, projection, longevity, dry-down, comfort, and value instead.

XUELEI uses simple, repeatable observations when comparing perfume samples. Rather than writing only “strong,” “weak,” or “very accurate,” it is more useful to record what changed, when it changed, how long it lasted, and whether the same result happened again.

IFRA gives typical ethanol-based fragrance ranges of about 3-8% for Eau de Cologne, 5-15% for Eau de Toilette, 10-20% for Eau de Parfum, and 15-40% for perfume extract. These are common ranges, not fixed rules used by every brand.[1]

An EDP is therefore not automatically a stronger or longer-lasting EDT. In some cases, the balance of the formula is different as well.

For performance testing, spray samples are easier to compare with full-size spray bottles. A dab vial puts perfume onto a small spot, while a sprayer spreads it over a wider area.

Choose the Benchmark

When accuracy matters, use the closest reliable reference available.

Always check that the fragrance name and concentration match first.

If two samples that should be the same smell different, check these points before making a judgment:

  1. exact fragrance version
  2. concentration
  3. amount applied
  4. atomizer output
  5. sample condition
  6. storage history
  7. production period
  8. source

A small difference in the opening matters less if the heart and dry-down stay close. A sample that develops in a different direction from beginning to end is more important.

A smell difference means the two samples do not match under the test conditions. It does not prove that either one is counterfeit.

Blotter Test

Label two unscented blotters before spraying. Use roughly the same spray distance and amount for both samples. Keep the strips apart, and avoid getting perfume from the hands, sleeves, table, or other blotters onto them.

These times are useful checkpoints, not fixed stages that every perfume follows.

Blotters work well for comparing:

  • overall smell
  • how the scent changes
  • relative strength
  • similarity to a reference

They are less useful for judging real projection. Body heat, airflow, concentration, and surface conditions can all affect how quickly fragrance moves into the air.[2]

Opening: 2-15 Minutes

Give the spray about two minutes before making the first note. The first few seconds can smell strongly of alcohol, especially when a small atomizer releases large droplets.

Simple words usually work best:

Avoid using “synthetic” as a general way to say that something smells bad. Synthetic aroma materials are normal in modern perfumery. Describe the actual smell instead.

When checking accuracy, a completely different main accord matters more than a small difference in strength.

Development: 15 Min-3 Hours

Follow the way the perfume changes rather than looking only for individual notes.

Sample A: bright citrus → aromatic woods → soft musk

Sample B: bright citrus → sweet amber → vanilla

The opening can be close even when the rest of the perfume is not.

Compare four stages:

This is more useful than calling a fragrance “90% accurate.” Home testing is not precise enough to support that kind of percentage.

Heart: 30-90 Minutes

By this point, the sharpest part of the opening has often faded and the main character becomes easier to notice.

There is no need to identify every note correctly.

For accuracy, check whether both samples move in the same general direction. If one becomes dry and woody while the other becomes sweet and creamy, that is a clear heart-stage difference.

Projection: 30 Min-4 Hours

Check projection on skin at the same times:

  • 30 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 2 hours
  • 4 hours, if it is still projecting

For personal notes, projection time can be grouped like this:

These are only useful labels for comparing samples. They are not quality grades.

Distance

At 30 and 60 minutes, check the fragrance:

  • close to the skin
  • about 15 cm away
  • about 30 cm away
  • at a normal talking distance

Do not treat the exact distance as a hard measurement. Room size, airflow, air conditioning, movement, spray location, and dose can all change the result.

“Sample A is still easy to smell without getting close after one hour” is useful. “Sample A projects exactly 30 cm” is not.

Sillage

Check the scent trail after the opening cloud has cleared.

  1. Spray the fragrance.
  2. Give it time to settle.
  3. Move around normally.
  4. Ask another person whether they can smell it after the wearer passes.

Do not count fragrance already hanging in the room from repeated spraying as sillage.

Nose Blindness

After smelling the same odor for a while, the nose may notice it less even though the fragrance is still there. This is called olfactory adaptation.[3]

Before writing “gone” in the notes:

  • leave the scented area for a while
  • come back later
  • ask another person whether the scent is still noticeable

Longevity: 30 Min-8+ Hours

Use the same checkpoints each time:

  • 30 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 2 hours
  • 4 hours
  • 6 hours
  • 8 hours

At each check, use one of these labels:

It is better to record three parts of performance separately:

  • Projection life
  • Skin-scent phase

This says much more than simply writing “8-hour longevity.”

Small differences should not be taken too seriously after only one wear. A result of 7 hours versus 7.5 hours is not very useful on its own.

Check the scent around 4 hours and again around 6-8 hours if it is still there.

When checking accuracy, a dry-down difference that appears again and again usually matters more than a small opening difference.

Do not put one fragrance on the wrist and the other on the neck. Heat, movement, airflow, and distance from the nose are different.

Research shows that skin condition and the properties of fragrance molecules can affect how quickly a scent evaporates. Factors such as skin hydration, water loss, roughness, and molecule type can all play a part.[4]

Keep clothing results separate.

12 hours on a shirt does not mean 12 hours on skin.

There is no need to guess how many milliliters come out in one spray. Sample atomizers vary too much for that to be useful.

If a sample seems much weaker than expected:

  1. look at the spray pattern
  2. compare how much perfume reaches the skin
  3. repeat the test with a closer amount

Check Storage

Be careful with samples that show signs of:

  • long periods in direct sunlight
  • high heat
  • loose caps
  • leaking atomizers
  • visible loss of liquid
  • a partly filled small vial with a poor seal

A poorly stored or partly evaporated sample may have a flatter opening, less freshness, unusual sharpness, or a smell that no longer matches a reliable reference.

Color alone is not enough to judge the condition of a perfume. Some fragrance materials naturally become darker over time.

Uneven evaporation can also change the balance of a small sample, especially in the opening.

Check Temperature

If a sample arrives very hot or very cold:

  1. keep it upright
  2. let it return to room temperature
  3. check that the sprayer works normally
  4. test it
  5. repeat the test later if the first result seems unusual

Temperature affects fragrance evaporation and movement through the air.[2]

There is no need to assume that every shipped sample must sit for several days or weeks before it can be tested.

Also note anything that could change the result:

  • temperature
  • indoor or outdoor setting
  • activity level
  • fragrance on clothing
  • strong smells in the room

A cold indoor test should not be directly compared with a hot outdoor test as if the conditions were the same.

Warm conditions can make fragrance easier to notice in the air, while cooler conditions can make it seem quieter. Temperature and airflow are known to affect fragrance release.[2]

This is a simple testing guide, not a statistical system.

If one perfume becomes a skin scent at around 2 hours on two separate wears while another remains easy to notice at 5 hours on both wears, that difference is worth using in the final decision.

Skin and Smell Differences

The same perfume can seem different from one person to another.

Common reasons include:

  • skin condition
  • temperature
  • amount applied
  • environment
  • nose blindness
  • different sensitivity to certain smell materials

Some people have very low sensitivity to certain odorants even though their general sense of smell is normal. This is known as specific anosmia and has been documented in smell research.[5]

Not being able to smell one part of a perfume does not prove that it is missing from the sample.

A perfume note list is not the same thing as an ingredient list.

Words such as leather, amber, sea salt, or clean laundry may describe the smell created by several materials working together.

Under U.S. cosmetic labeling rules, fragrance formula materials may also be listed together simply as “Fragrance.”[6]

“Sample B becomes more powdery after two hours” is already a useful note. There is no need to identify the exact material behind it.

Record Balance

  • Does the sweetness keep getting stronger?
  • Does one part take over the whole fragrance?
  • Does the opening become smoother with time?
  • Does the base still smell like the same perfume?
  • Does any part become tiring after a few hours?

Balance is mainly about whether the fragrance works well for the wearer. A perfume with one strong main note is not automatically poorly made.

Before choosing a result:

Do not turn this into an invented percentage such as 85% or 92% accurate.

When Samples Don't Match

Check Reformulation

If the production dates are known, compare them.

Formula changes can happen because of:

  • ingredient availability
  • regulatory changes
  • supplier changes
  • production changes
  • formula updates

Do not treat an online reformulation claim as proof unless there is reliable information behind it.

Better: “The older sample smells drier in the base.”

Too strong without evidence: “The fragrance was definitely reformulated.”

Check Authenticity

Look at the source before relying on smell alone.

Four-Day Protocol

Day 1

  • Test 2 samples on separate blotters.
  • Check at 2 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours, and 5 hours.
  • Write down the opening, changes, relative strength, and dry-down.
  • If accuracy matters, compare all 4 stages.

Day 2

  • Wear Sample A on skin.
  • Use a normal amount.
  • Check projection at 30 minutes.
  • Check projection again at 1 hour.
  • Record the smell at 2 hours.
  • Check the dry-down at 4 hours.
  • Check what remains at 6-8 hours.
  • Note when it becomes a skin scent.
  • Record comfort.

Day 3

  • Wear Sample B under similar conditions.
  • Use the same number of sprays only if both atomizers spray a similar amount.
  • If not, try to match the amount applied.
  • Use the same checkpoints as Day 2.

Day 4

Skin Safety

Do not apply perfume to:

  • broken skin
  • irritated skin
  • freshly irritated shaved skin
  • an existing rash

FDA notes that fragrance ingredients can cause sensitivity or allergic reactions in some people.[7]

Stop using the perfume on skin if it causes:

  • burning
  • itching
  • redness
  • swelling
  • another unexpected reaction

Get appropriate medical help if the reaction is serious, gets worse, or does not settle.

“Natural” does not automatically mean safer. IFRA Standards can restrict, ban, or set conditions for the use of fragrance materials based on safety assessments.[8]

How many samples should be compared at once?

Two works best for a detailed side-by-side test. Two or three is a reasonable limit for one focused blotter session. For a full skin test, use one fragrance per day.

How long should a perfume sample be tested?

Keep testing until the dry-down. Useful checkpoints are 2 minutes, 30 minutes, 1-2 hours, 4-6 hours, and 8 hours if the perfume is still noticeable.

Should perfume be tested on paper or skin?

Use paper to compare smell and development. Use skin to judge projection, comfort, real wear time, and the final purchase.

Why does a sample smell weaker than a bottle?

Check the amount sprayed and the atomizer first. Then look at storage, evaporation, test conditions, and possible nose blindness.

Why does a decant smell different?

Is projection the same as longevity?

No.

Projection is how easily the fragrance can be smelled away from the skin.

Longevity is how long the fragrance remains detectable.

Does EDP always last longer than EDT?

No. Concentration names do not create a fixed performance ranking, and different versions may also use different formula balances.

Can other people smell a fragrance when the wearer cannot?

Yes. Continued exposure can make the wearer notice the smell less over time. This is olfactory adaptation.[3]

Can an old decant lose part of its opening?

Yes, especially if the vial does not seal well or some of the liquid has evaporated. The opening may become flatter, heavier, or less fresh.

How many wears are enough before buying?

For an expensive bottle, two or three similar full wears give a much better picture than one quick test. If the first two wears give very different results, test it again under more similar conditions.
